CENIMAT|i3N at NOVA FCT is part of LEAF – Self-Powered, Self-Reshaping Autarkic Skin for Wireless Motes, a 24-month project funded under the Horizon Europe Hop-On Facility call HORIZON-WIDERA-2025-03-ACCESS-01. CENIMAT|i3N will receive 428.5 k€ to support its activities within the consortium.
 
Led at NOVA FCT by CENIMAT|i3N researcher Emanuel Carlos, with the support of his team, LEAF is developing a new generation of sustainable, self-powered electronic skins that integrate energy harvesting, storage and environmental sensing into autonomous wireless motes.

The CleanNote project, a joint initiative between i3N-NOVA and AlmaScience, has won the 1st edition of the "Vamos dar uma segunda vida às notas" competition, promoted by Bank of Portugal.
In a remarkable display of academic leadership, all three finalists in the competition were developed by teams from NOVA FCT, highlighting the faculty's immense contribution to sustainable innovation and the circular economy.
The initiative aimed to find environmentally sustainable alternatives to incineration. By promoting creativity and circular economy principles, the challenge sought solutions that generate real-world value from waste.
The award ceremony took place on January 22, 2026, at the Bank of Portugal facilities in Carregado.

Following our Three Kings' Day gathering on January 6th, we are proud to announce the final result of our solidarity initiative. Last Friday, we officially handed over the collected donations to FACIT, represented by Professor Teresa Calvão.
 
FACIT provides essential social support to students and staff across the NOVA FCT campus. These funds will directly contribute to their mission of fostering a supportive academic environment.
 
A sincere thank you to every participant for your voluntary contributions. Together, we are upholding the values of community spirit and shared responsibility that define our faculty.

On January 6th, we marked Three Kings' Day with our traditional get-together, held in the CENIMAT building. 
This year, the initiative was associated with a solidarity action, with FACIT chosen as the Secret Friend. FACIT - which means “let it be done” in Latin - is an association devoted to social solidarity within the NOVA FCT community, providing support to students and staff facing economic difficulties. The celebration was honoured by the presence of the Dean of NOVA FCT, Professor José Júlio Alferes, and the President of the Department of Materials Science, Professor Hugo Águas. The gathering also included a speech by Professor Rodrigo Martins, coordinator of i3N, who highlighted the importance of community spirit, solidarity, and shared responsibility alongside scientific excellence.

Researcher Rui Gonçalves won first prize in the SPIN Rise: Pitch the Science accelerator program, whose in-person phase took place between November 26th-28th, in Milan, Italy.
 
The program, organized by B4i – Bocconi for Innovation, aims to train and help researchers transform scientific results into solutions with real impact on the market, promoting the valorization of intellectual property and the development of technological start-ups.
 
The project team consists of Rui Gonçalves and his advisors and co-founders of the technology, Dr. António Vicente and Professor Manuel Mendes. The start-up proposal is based on the technology of modular and adaptable solar panels, which they have been developing and are in the process of protecting, which allows solar energy to be assembled, expanded, and configured in a way that is completely adjustable to the needs of each user.
 
As the winner, Rui gained direct access to the international pre-acceleration program from 28Digital (formerly EIT Digital).

On December 9th, 15h00, at the UNINOVA Amphitheater, Dr. Anna Chiara Bressi, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Applied Materials for Printed and Soft Electronics (LAMPSe), Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, will present an overview of recent research on Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG) produced from synthetic and bioderived polymeric precursors. 
 
The seminar will cover the structure–property relationships of LIG obtained through direct laser irradiation, highlighting its rapid, scalable, and chemical-free fabrication process. Topics will include applications in soft electronics, soft robotics, and environmental remediation, as well as a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment comparing synthetic and bioderived precursors.

NANOMAT-Talks are back!
 
On November 20th, 15h00, CENIMAT|i3N Amphitheater, Professor Quan Li will provide an overview of his group’s recent research on responsive materials and their transformative applications. Topics will include dynamic photonics, laser steering, energy-saving technologies, deformable systems, and tumor phototherapy, with a strong emphasis on liquid-crystal-based systems and emerging responsive platforms. This lecture will highlight the significant potential of these materials in diverse fields such as biomedicine, electronics, aerospace, and environmental sustainability.

CENIMAT|i3N's Chemistry Laboratory has officially been certified by My Green Lab at the HIGHEST level - GREEN - achieving an outstanding score of 90%!
 
This achievement was the result of a long and demanding process, full of hard work, learning, and above all, teamwork.
 
It wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our 32 My Green Lab Ambassadors and our Elite Green Squad (Francisca Paraíso, Cristina Teixeira, Dorina (Theodora) Papanastasiou, João Afonso Mendes, Ricardo Ferreira, Madalena Maria Roque, and Bárbara Gonçalves Coelho), who gave their all every step of the way.
 
A special thanks to Alexandra Gonçalves and Francisca Paraíso, which lead this journey - their determination, precision, and tireless effort were key to reaching this milestone.

Dr. Henrique Vazão de Almeida took part in the 2025 China-Portugal Traditional Medicines Forum, held at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon.
Representing i3N, Dr. Henrique presented the group’s research on Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications, highlighting the potential of advanced materials in bridging modern science and traditional medicine.
The Forum also featured a video address by Professor Rodrigo Martins, who emphasized the importance of strengthening scientific collaboration between China, Portugal, and Europe.
The participation of i3N in this international event reinforces the institute’s commitment to scientific diplomacy, international cooperation, and research excellence.

After winning the Demo Day of the NOVA impACT! Challenges, the NOVA Startup Competition 2025, GeoCura, a team composed of Erasmus Mundus students from the Master in Advanced Materials and Innovative Recycling at DCM achieved international recognition by winning the Tapojärvi Innovation Challenge. This competition, organized in Finland, offers European university students the opportunity to apply their skills to solving effective industrial challenges, developing scalable and replicable solutions aimed at fostering a sustainable industry.

i3N through NOVA FCT is an associate partner of FERNS, an European research initiative coordinated by Tyndall National Institute, that aims to reshape how electronic devices are designed, manufactured, and reused. The project is now recruiting 15 PhD researchers to help build the next generation of sustainable electronics, and 2 of these positions are at NOVA FCT.
Funded through the 2024 Horizon Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks programme, FERNS offers early-stage researchers the chance to work across disciplines and countries, addressing the environmental impact of electronics and advancing circular design principles.
The applications are open until December 31st, 2025.

Professor Rodrigo Martins, Coordinator of i3N and President of the European Academy of Sciences, delivered the opening speech of the International Conference on Advanced Materials, which is taking place from 20 to 23 October in Ningbo, China.
Tomorrow, October 21st, Professor Rodrigo Martins will also give a talk entitled “AI and Emerging Electronics Materials to Answer to Digitalization Demands”, highlighting the role of advanced materials in shaping the future of digital technologies.
On 22th October, Professor Elvira Fortunato, vice-coordinator of i3N, will present her lecture on “Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications”, focusing on the intersection between materials science and healthcare innovation.
Both Professors are part of the Advisory Board of the Conference, reinforcing i3N’s strong international presence and leadership in the field of advanced materials and nanotechnology.

The Chinese Government’s Friendship Award is the highest honour bestowed by the People's Republic of China on foreign experts who have made exceptional contributions to the country’s economic and social development.
The awards ceremony took place on September 30th, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, under the auspices of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs). The event was attended by other ministers and vice-ministers of the Chinese government. This celebration coincided with China’s National Day. 
Among the recipients, we proudly highlight Professor Rodrigo Martins, President of the European Academy of Sciences, i3N Coordinator, NOVA FCT Full Professor and coordinator of the association NANOMAT, who was selected to represent exceptional achievements so far achieved in the fields of science and technology. He was joined by three other distinguished global academicians, including Professor Donald Dingwell, current President of the Academy EUROPAEA, member of SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) and Professor Rui Martins, Vice-Rector of the University of Macau. Professor Rodrigo Martins was appointed as an expert in the EU-Japan Joint Expert Group on Advanced Materials.
Within this framework, Professor Rodrigo Martins was appointed to draft all initiatives related to Materials for Electronics. The group’s final recommendations have now been officially published by the European Commission and the Government of Japan.
The publication was announced on October 6, 2025, in Tokyo, by European Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva, marking a key milestone in strengthening EU–Japan collaboration in research and innovation.

8 activities and over 30 researchers from CENIMAT|i3N joined the European Researchers’ Night 2025, last Friday, September 26th, at Pavilhão do Conhecimento, Lisbon.
We shared science curiosities and hands-on experiences in key areas such as Climate Change, Beating Cancer, Smart Cities, and Ocean & Waters. Families and visitors explored our prototypes and interactive demos, discovering how our research is shaping a more sustainable and innovative future. 
Initiatives like this remind us that science is for everyone, and that together we can build knowledge, inspire curiosity, and create solutions for tomorrow.

From pioneering the world’s first paper transistor to leading 200+ research projects and securing over €78 million in funding, her impact is global. She served as Portugal’s Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, yet remains, in her own words, a “scientist-artist” whose scientific freedom is bulletproof and not for sale. Under her leadership, CENIMAT|i3N has become a hub for sustainable, cutting-edge materials research, winning 12 European Research Council projects—30% of NOVA University’s total ERC grants.

Maria Morais, CENIMAT|i3N PhD student, received the Best Poster Award at the Symposium S – Electronic, Photonic, Nano, Low-dimensional and Quantum Materials during the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) 2025 Fall Meeting, held in Warsaw, Poland, from 15 to 18 September 2025. 
 
Her work, entitled “Microwave-assisted growth of zinc oxide nanostructures for impact pressure sensing applications", was developed within the scope of her doctoral research and highlights CENIMAT’s ongoing excellence in advanced materials and nanotechnology. 
 
Congratulations to Maria on this well-deserved international recognition.

On September 5, 2025, i3N-NOVA (Caparica campus) welcomed a high-level delegation from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), marking an important step in strengthening scientific collaboration between Europe and China.
The delegation was led by Prof. Wang Dujin, Director-General of the Bureau of Academic Divisions at CAS, and included distinguished researchers and officials such as Prof. Yu Shuhong, Prof. Leng Jinsong, Dr. Feng Xia, Dr. Ru Zhitao, and Dr. Huang Lin, who also serves as Head of the Science and Technology Group of CAS and member of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc). They were received by Prof. Rodrigo Martins, Director of i3N-NOVA and President of EurASc, recently honored with the CAS International Cooperation Award for Distinguished Scientists (2023), the highest recognition granted by CAS to foreign experts.

We're excited to welcome Professor Matteo Gigli from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice to share his latest research on biomass valorization into advanced functional materials.
 
From chitin-based biomedical films to bioactive packaging polyesters, and lignin valorization via enzymatic treatments, his work pushes the boundaries of green chemistry and circular innovation.
 
The seminar will take place at 11h00, on July 30th, at the Library Auditorium and it is open to the entire community.

i3N would like to congratulate its members and researcher students elected as councillors to the Faculty Council of NOVA FCT, namely Professor João Paulo Borges, who won the elections for Representatives of Teachers and Researchers as the head of the list, as well as our elected colleagues Rui Igreja and Isabel Ferreira (3 i3N members elected, out of 9!), and PhD student Edgar Coimbra (out of two elected).
 
In addition to the excellence of our research, our members are also actively involved in shaping the education and research policies of the university/faculty that hosts us.
