SusMatEner is a Marie Curie Doctoral Network funded by the HORIZON EUROPE programme.
 
We offer 15 PhD positions in materials science, for projects starting in autumn 2025. CENIMAT|i3N is involved in the supervision of 5 PhD theses:
  • PhD1: Hybrid highly conducting transparent perovskite-halide perovskite solar cells.
  • PhD3: Stable and transparent metallic nanowire-based nanocomposites for thermal and solar energy applications.
  • PhD5: Integrating criticality and circularity assessment into the Life Cycle Analysis used for developing sustainable Materials-by-Design for renewable energy.
  • PhD11: Photonic nano-structuring for solar energy harvesting.
  • PhD12: New heterostructures for self-powered UV photodetection and power electronic.

Professor Elvira Fortunato was elected as a member of the Materials Engineering Admission and Qualification Board, which is part of the National Bodies of the Order of Engineers. 
 
The ceremony for the elected bodies for the 2025/2028 term took place on March 25th.

Ricardo Conde has over 30 years of experience in the space sector and is the President of the Portuguese Space Agency since 2020. He has been a speaker at various international conferences, focusing on the role of emerging space agencies as new actors in the space sector, space sustainability, and the impact of space technologies on a sustainable planet.

On March 7th, CENIMAT had the honor of welcoming a delegation of two renowned researchers from South Korea, Professor Yong-Young Noh, representing POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), and Dr. Hyun-Suk Kim, from  Dongguk University. The visit fostered scientific exchange and strengthened collaborations.
 
The delegation was introduced to CENIMAT | i3N by Professor Rodrigo Martins, followed by a tour of our state-of-the-art laboratories. 
As part of their visit, the researchers participated in a special session of NANOMAT-Talks, where Prof. Yong-Young Noh (POSTECH) and Dr. Hyun-Suk Kim (Dongguk University) presented their latest work on high-performance p-type semiconductors and polymer-based high-k dielectrics for transistor applications.

On 5 March, CENIMAT|i3N hosted a delegation from the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Macao Government. The visit was highlighted by the signing of two important cooperation agreements to promote research collaboration, academic exchanges and innovation in the fields of materials science and nanotechnology.
 
The signing ceremony, in the presence of Professor João Amaro de Matos (Vice-Rector of NOVA University), Professor José Júlio Alferes (Dean of NOVA FCT) and Professor Elvira Fortunato (Vice-Coordinator of CENIMAT|i3N), formalised partnerships with MUST and Macao Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (MIMSE), to create new platforms for research and development. The agreements include initiatives for student exchanges, joint research projects and the creation of an international joint research center for materials science and nanotechnology.

Professor Rodrigo Martins has been appointed as a member of the Expert Advisory Board (EAB) of the European University for Customized Education (EUNICE) for the term April 2025 – October 2027.
 
EUNICE is a transnational university alliance comprising 10 European public universities and representing over 150,000 students and 15,000 staff members across all major European regions. The alliance aims to redefine higher education by fostering personalized learning experiences, interdisciplinary research, and innovative teaching models that address global challenges.

The ‘Steadylife’ project, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application that aims to revolutionise Parkinson's diagnosis, was the big winner of the 13th edition of the NOVA FCT Entrepreneurship Programme.
 
SteadyLife aims to revolutionise the method of diagnosing Parkinson's Disease, which affects 10 million people worldwide and 18,000 patients in Portugal.
The team, which includes two students from the Master's programme in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering, Carlota Coutinho and Catarina Abranches, presented a project that aims to continuously track the development of the disease with precision, helping doctors make diagnostic decisions. This requires no additional equipment, just a mobile phone with internet access.
 
The team won 1000 euros for 1st place in the competition, plus 500 euros for the corporate Build The Future Award from NTT DATA.

NOVA FCT will have scholarships for master's degrees in the next academic year, for students with a final bachelor's degree average of 15 or more.
 
Application Period: 1st – 30th September 2025
Eligibility: Students must apply after enrolling in a master's programme at NOVA FCT.
Results: The list of selected candidates will be published on the faculty's website by 15th October.
 
Master's programmes in the Department of Materials Science (DCM) are eligible.

On February 14, CENIMAT|i3N had the honor of welcoming Turkish Ambassador Haldun Koç. The visit began with a meeting between Professor José Júlio Alferes, Director of NOVA FCT, Professor Rodrigo Martins, Coordinator of i3N, and Professor Elvira Fortunato, Vice-Coordinator of i3N.
 
Following the meeting, Ambassador Koç toured the laboratories, where he engaged with researchers and explored ongoing projects. During the visit, Turkish researcher Ugur Deneb Menda, a member of the CENIMAT|i3N team, had the opportunity to present her work and discuss its impact with the ambassador.
