Microscopy - SEM Microscopy Laboratory

Responsible: Rui Silva

Description: This laboratory is equipped with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with image processing and quantitative analysis and elemental chemical analysis by EDS. The electron beam high voltage can be varied from 490 V to 30,000 V and the magnification can be varied between 5x and 300,000x, with a resolution of 3.5 nm.
Operating modes:
• image observation with secondary or backscattered electrons;
• digital display of absorbed electrons;
• elemental chemical analysis (point, linear and area) by characteristic X-ray emission and mapping of chemical composition.
It is also available an evaporator for coating non-conducting samples with carbon or gold.
