Description

Joana Romao is a senior chemist specialized on material synthesis and catalysis. She graduated (BSc, MSc) in the field of organic chemistry at Faculdade de Ciências e Technologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2011, she joined the Photocatalysis Synthesis group (PCS) for her PhD at University of Twente (UT), Netherlands, being supervised by Prof. Guido Mul, in a consortium with the industry partners Lionix, Philips and Vitens. Her PhD thesis title is “Photocatalytic water cleaning technology”. On it, she has approached different dimensions of (photo)catalysis, from catalyst synthesis (TiO2/ZnO) to reactor design.

After obtaining her PhD degree in October 2015, she joined the Lab of Green Catalysis at National University of Singapore in a short visit (EURASIACAT Grant) for doing catalyst synthesis (Pd–Pb alloy nanocrystals, Pt/TiO2). In 2016, she started working as post-doctoral research at CAT Catalytic Center in RWTH Aachen University on research projects for the polymer company Covestro. The work focus was on the optimization of heterogeneous catalytic systems design and optimization from small scale batch reactor to continuous stirred-tank.

Currently, she is working in a team led by Dr. Paula Soares and Prof. Dr. João Paulo Borges part of FCT project for developing novel dual-stimuli responsive nanofibrous magnetic membranes for biomedical applications.

She has several research interests, such as, synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials, heterogeneous catalysis and reactors engineering.
